Organization Description:

Arts for Learning Maryland (A4L), was the founding chapter of Young Audiences, the country’s foremost arts-in-education non-profit organization. Arts for Learning provides more than 9,000 arts education opportunities to nearly 200,000 students, artists, and educators throughout the state each year. YA is a mission-driven organization that values community, innovation, and passion. The staff, board, and teaching artists have a shared commitment to advance equity in the field of education by working tirelessly to generate opportunities for students to imagine, create, and realize their full potential through the arts.

Job Description:

We are looking for a knowledgeable, trustworthy, and conscientious leader with excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills. The Human Resources Director will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization's mission and talent strategy. Arts for Learning has roughly 35 “office” employees and 400 seasonal employees. The HR Director will be critical in supporting the organization as it becomes more intentional around its commitment to advance equitable outcomes, both for the children and communities we partner with and for our staff. This role will be instrumental in achieving higher levels of diversity in our staff, while focusing on refining and developing policies, procedures, and practices to ensure an inclusive and equitable work environment. The HR Director is a full-time, exempt position and will report to the Chief Operating Officer.

Responsibilities Include:

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department. Currently there is one HR coordinator.

Oversees the daily workflow of the department.

Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.

Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Collaborates with COO and other senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.

Develops and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organizations’ human resource compliance and strategy needs.

Leads and administers human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management (including annual performance reviews and Managing the Arts for Learning Way); productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.

Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; utilizes best practices for hiring and talent management and assists with job descriptions.

Works with other department leads to hire, onboard, and track temporary employees.

Develops an annual plan to understand the seasonal hiring needs of programs and ensure HR capacity to execute during project timelines.

Analyzes organizational trends as they pertain to human resources and conducts and shares this analysis on an annual basis.

Ensures the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.

Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.

Develops and implements departmental budget.

Maintains and updates the employee handbook.

Facilitates professional development and training related to their scope of work.

Serves on the operational leadership team of the organization. Through leadership in their respective role as HR director and through this team, plays a critical role in supporting and advancing a healthy organizational culture, where goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion are attained and where employee satisfaction is central.

Maintains employee personnel files, including hiring documents, performance evaluations, pay raise/promotion correspondences and any other relevant information.

Other HR duties as necessary to oversee and manage the HR function of the organization.

Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.

Proficient with Google Suite

Desired skills and Background:

At least five years of human resource management experience is required.

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or Nonprofit Management related field.

Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Excellent computer skills with demonstrated skills in database management and record keeping.

Salary $72,000. Arts for Learning also has many benefits including health insurance with nominal employee contribution, competitive vacation and personal leave, up to 4% matching contribution and perks like comp time and the office being closed between Christmas Eve and New Years Day. Currently the position is remote and we envision in the future there will be some hybrid of remote and in-person work.
