Arts for Learning Maryland (formerly Young Audiences of Maryland) is devoted to enriching the lives and education of Maryland’s youth through educational and culturally diverse arts programs. Through Arts for Learning, professional teaching artists from all disciplines partner with educators, schools, and school districts to provide -- on average -- over 300,000 hours of learning in, through, and about the arts to more than 185,000 Maryland students annually.

About the Bloomberg Arts Internship


In 2012, Bloomberg Philanthropies created the Bloomberg Arts Internship program in New York City as a pipeline for public school students to college and careers in the arts. The program’s success led the foundation to expand its reach to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston. As Baltimore enters its sixth year, Arts for Learning Maryland is in search of 40 dynamic Baltimore City Public Schools rising seniors to make up the 2022 class. Should we reach our goal of 40 interns, we will split the class into two cohorts.


BAI is a rigorous program with three major elements: a six-week paid placement working day-to-day in an arts organization; opportunities to connect with artists, leaders and organizations that make Baltimore City such a vibrant arts community; and professional development focused on college and career readiness.

We currently anticipate that BAI 2022 will be an IN PERSON program, though interns may complete parts of their internships virtually as decided by them and their site supervisors. We will continue to update our plans based on city and state COVID safety precautions. In 2020, we were fully virtual and in 2021, we operated a hybrid program. We are prepared to deliver a strong, engaging program in any format!

About the role...

Writing coaches work collaboratively to build and facilitate a curriculum that includes in-class writer’s workshops crafted to develop three pieces: a personal essay (This I Believe or a response to a piece of art), an artist statement, and a completed draft of their college essay. Workshops will help to build interns’ writing stamina, guide them in determining the kinds of writers they are, support them in writing with their authentic voices, and help them understand the value of revision and persistence. Writing Coaches will each have 6-8 interns in their small group and will provide feedback in those small groups, as well as written feedback through Google Docs. They will share interns’ drafts with our outside evaluators as a way to evaluate and improve the program. Weekly blog posts will create a routine that allows the students to develop writing skills in a safe and imaginative environment. In partnership with College Mentors, Writing Coaches will also facilitate small group Book Clubs around texts that interns self select.

The ideal coach:

  • has experience facilitating writing workshops;
  • is proactive, detail oriented and possesses strong communication, organizational and management skills;
  • has the ability and desire to collaborate;
  • has an affinity for the nature and value of the internship program and an understanding of the needs and capacities of high school students;
  • believes in holding interns to high expectations while individualizing the support to get them there;
  • has the ability to create inclusive environments where all students’ unique gifts and talents are discovered and cultivated, and where students’ identities (racial, cultural, social, gender, etc.) are reflected all around them and matter through acknowledgement and affirmation;
  • has the ability to examine biases and an understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and its impact on policies and practices, especially related to the administration of public education;
  • has a passion for students: an ability to build meaningful relationships and a desire to “go above and beyond” to create homeplaces where Black joy is cultivated and thrives.

The Lead Writing Coach will also be responsible for interviewing potential coaches, supporting the Training/Orientation of fellow coaches, facilitating the creation of the writing workshops with the team, creating/monitoring the 2022 BAI Blog, leading a resume writing workshop (August 12 10:30-2:15--one hour per cohort with lunch in between), and more! (Ideally, this candidate has worked in the program in the past.)


  • The Writing Coach position is a seasonal exempt position and is not eligible for health benefits or overtime.
  • Writing Coaches will work approximately 144 hours @ $40/hour.
  • The Lead Writing Coach receives an additional $500 bonus.

Our COVID Policy

All Writing Coaches are classified as Arts for Learning temporary employees. To align with our current Covid-19 policies, if hired for Summer 2022 you will be required to submit proof of Covid-19 vaccination. If you are not able to receive the vaccine, you may request a waiver. If a waiver is granted, you will be required to submit a Covid-19 test each Monday morning, taken within 72 hours. More information will be provided upon hiring.
