The Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) seeks a Director of Communications & Marketing, who is responsible for the strategy and implementation of a comprehensive communications and marketing plan to promote public awareness of and engagement with MCHC. The Director of Communications & Marketing oversees the promotion, messaging, communications, and advertising efforts in order to increase brand visibility, drive traffic (both online and in-person), support comprehensive engagement efforts, and aid in earned and contributed income strategies. This position is responsible for providing brand management, developing and executing the annual and project-based marketing plans, and managing public relations and media inquiries.

The ideal candidate is highly creative with a wide range of experience using different channels in a marketing and/or promotional capacity. They are an experienced leader and able to juggle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. They are enthusiastic about the mission of MCHC.

The position reports to the Vice President of Advancement and works cross-departmentally to externally market MCHC’s Museum, Library, exhibitions, education programs, public events, and fundraising and membership initiatives through an integrated mix of print and digital collateral materials and public relations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Brand Management

Promote MCHC’s brand identity and mission across all media and audiences, ensuring a consistent, effective, and engaging institutional message and image.

Build loyal audiences, stakeholders, and patrons through positive brand association.

Develop a strategic brand management plan to help improve brand recognition, boost revenue, and achieve long-term business goals.

Digital and Print Content Strategy and Management

Create and own annual marketing and communications plan with key performance indicators and measurable steps, taking into consideration the need for both print and digital content development. Annual marketing plan needs to cover the organization as a whole and time-sensitive specific projects, including exhibitions, public program seasons, fundraising initiatives, and educational offerings.

Write and design MCHC’s monthly e-newsletter.

Track and measure audience engagement across print and digital platforms on a consistent basis, and effectively use data to inform MCHC’s overall marketing strategy.

Write, edit, and update content on MCHC’s website, including working closely with the Library to manage digital collections and search tools integrated with the website.

Serve as Editor of Maryland History and Culture News, MCHC’s semiannual membership magazine. Maintain the editorial calendar, develop content in collaboration with staff writers, edit content, and work with an external design, print, and mail house vendor.

In collaboration with the Advancement Operations Manager, develop and order institutional stationery materials.

Review and refine all marketing and communication materials developed by other departments to ensure brand standards are met, a consistent voice is used, and quality of materials produced is high. This includes, but is not limited to, spring and fall event calendars, program brochures, flyers, rack cards, post cards, fact sheets, and banners advertising MCHC’s programs, events, and offerings.

Provide staffing and logistical support for in-person public events.

Media, Public Relations, and Advertising

Determine and implement the strategy for press outreach, including press releases, press kits and materials, interview preparation, and serve as the point person for all media requests.

Develop and maintain relationships with members of the media and manage a media contact list.

Identify trends, monitor current events and influencers to anticipate opportunities for MCHC to engage in and/or lead in conversation about history education and preservation.

Identify opportunities for digital and print advertising to promote MCHC’s Museum, Library, educational resources, and public events. Work with staff and external design vendor to develop and design ad concepts.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field preferred.

2-3 years of experience in a promotional, marketing, and/or media relations capacity.

Ability to work with multiple stakeholders (both internal and external).

Experience managing and designing email marketing campaigns to build community and drive response.

Experience with Salesforce, Pardot, and Wordpress a plus.

The ability to work collaboratively on multiple projects with multiple stakeholders simultaneously within limited time frames.

Excellent writing, communication, and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to write for different audiences and purposes.

An excellent understanding of marketing principles, including planning, advertising, and design and a demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively about developing and extending messaging through different promotional and communication vehicles.

About the Position

This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits with occasional evening and weekend hours. The salary range is $60,000 - $65,000 annually. The final salary will be determined based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
