Position Description

The Maryland Center for History and Culture seeks an enthusiastic Special Events and Group Sales
Manager to join a knowledgeable and dedicated Operations team. The ideal candidate for this
position would be someone who is passionate about planning and coordinating onsite events, and
has past experience in group sales. Through representing MCHC at various tourism related
organizations, this position is also responsible for keeping the MCHC staff aware of potential
community collaborations and/or partnerships related to the tourism industry.
The Special Events and Group Sales Manager will be tasked with creating a plan to increase rental
revenue and boost onsite visitation through group sales. This person provides guidance on and helps
develop policies related to event planning, procedures, and pricing as well as manages the day-today
needs of onsite rental groups. This position reports to the Vice President for Operations and
Visitor Experience.

Responsibilities:
Special Events:
 Organize, implement, and supervise all aspects of private events from the initial contact with
prospective clients through the conclusion of their event. This includes regular
correspondence with clients and caterers to discuss planning and logistics, client
walkthroughs, execution of contracts and payment, daytime/evening event facilitation.
 Create, maintain, and enforce all MCHC policies related to private events.
 In conjunction with the External Affairs and Education departments, assist with planning of
internal programming and cultivation events.
 In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications, develop and execute a
plan to maximize private events income by actively marketing the venue.
 Serve as the site manager for the duration of all private events, including evenings and
weekends. Oversee and participate in event setup/breakdown.
 Foster and maintain relationships with catering and other event partners.
 Communicate with Visitor Experience and Facilities staff to assist with scheduling and to
troubleshoot and ensure that all aspects of events are supported.
 Maintain accurate budget and reconcile all income and expenses with accounting staff.
 Attend to all other duties as assigned.
Group Sales/Tourism Related Responsibilities
 Serve as the MCHC representative to various tourism/events organizations.
 Establish relationships with community partners and individuals that help expand MCHC’s
tourism industry connections.
 Create a group sales marketing plan, in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and
Communications, to promote MCHC to a wider audience.
 Develop relationships with bus operators and group tour organizations and work with them
to include MCHC as a destination for their audiences.
 Work with Museum Learning Manager to refine/develop the process for fulfilling group tour
inquiries/sales.
Qualifications:
● 3-5 years of experience in the events management and sales field required;
● High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
● Interest in art, culture, history, nonprofits, or museums is a plus;
● Excellent customer service and communications skills.
● Working knowledge of business office applications including email, word processing,
spreadsheet and database applications preferred;
● Required to work weekends and evening events;
● Moderate physical activity. Must be able to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
About the Position
This is a full-time, 35-hour per week salaried position with benefits. The salary range is $45,000-
$50,000 annually. Final salary will be determined based on the experience and qualifications of the
successful candidate.
