Music Director at Second Presbyterian Church (Baltimore, MD)

Job Summary: The Music Director/ Instrumentalist works collaboratively with the Pastors and members of the congregation to lead and encourage people of all ages, cultures, and talents to participate in the music ministry of the Church in order to enhance the worship experience and encourage spiritual growth through music. She/he reports directly to the Senior Pastor and Chairperson of Worship, Music, and Sacraments (WMS) Council. She/he interacts on a regular basis with all Pastors, other Church office staff, musicians (paid and volunteer) and relevant Church Councils. She/he engages the congregation of the Church through music in worship, supports the entire music program, and experiments with creative uses of music in worship in conformance with PC (USA) guidelines.

Required qualifications: An undergraduate degree in music or equivalent; graduate degree in conducting, arranging or performance preferred. Minimum 3-5 years working as a church musician in a leadership role. Candidates must be available on or before May 1, 2020.

Desired skills: Candidates will demonstrate excellent musicianship (piano required, organ a plus) and musicality, ability to coach musicians of all levels, familiarity with and respect for all types of worship music, as well as the ability to collaborate and work well within a team. Strong administrative skills (supervising other musicians, communicating, budgeting and planning) are also required. Knowledge of audio/visual systems highly valued.

Responsibilities

With respect to Worship Services and related matters, the Music Director will:

  • Oversee and participate in weekly Sunday worship services and all worship services related to holidays.Two services (9 am and 11 am) occur from September – May with occasional single services at 10 am related to special congregational events.From June – August a single service is held at 10 am.
    • Ensure continuity between music experiences at both services.
    • Supervise the musicians participating in the 9 am service (the Second @ 9 band) and actively direct the Chancel Choir and other musicians as needed at the 11 am service.
      • conduct weekly rehearsals of the Chancel Choir and any rehearsals prior to regular, holiday or special worship services.
    • If not available, the Music Director will provide for substitute leadership and music to ensure continuity of programming.
  • Supervise and include as appropriate in Sunday and holiday worship the bell choir (Bells at Second), the Children and Youth Choir (Peace Choir) or other special musicians.
  • Regularly engage with Pastors to select hymns, anthems and other special music for regular and special services.
  • Supervise the annual Christmas pageant in collaboration with volunteers and families.
  • Participate in congregational weddings, funerals and other events as requested by the Pastors or secure appropriate substitute.

With respective to Administrative matters, the Music Director will:

  • Supervise (including annual evaluations) the music staff.This currently includes an assistant director of music (accompanist for the Second @ 9 band), a bell choir/youth choir director and four paid vocalists.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and meetings of the WMS Council and other councils or committees as needed.
  • Contribute to seasonal worship planning processes.
  • Assist in development of music ministries for children and youth.
  • Develop and propose an annual budget for music activities and programs.
  • Curate and maintain the choral library.
  • Support the Chairperson of the WMS Council.
  • Provide advice to appropriate Church leadership and oversee maintenance of Church instruments, including:
    • A 3 manual Casavant organ with a new digital Peragallo console
    • A 2 manual unit organ by Moller
    • Three grand pianos (Steinway, Boston and Chickering)
    • Handbells and Chimes.

With respect to our Community, the Music Director will:

  • Serve as a liaison with any musical organization that seeks to engage with the Church.
  • Maintain a productive working relationship with the Managing Director and Board leadership of Community Concerts at Second.
  • Review (and make recommendations to appropriate Church leadership) any requests for use of our instruments or space for musical purposes from community members.
