The SALA Teaching Artist Job Description:
The Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA) Teaching Artist is the heart and soul of the Academy. Teaching Artists are paired with a grade level Classroom Teacher for the entire six weeks of the program (Monday - Thursday). These pairs are responsible for delivering engaging, meaningful, and joyful arts-integrated instruction both in and through the arts daily. Teacher/Artist pairs will co-plan and co-teach one class of arts-integrated math and one class of arts-integrated literacy to the same students each day. In addition, all Teaching Artists are expected to lead a SQUAD session each morning, in partnership with their Teacher. On program days, Teaching Artists have the option of teaching a partial day (8:30 am - 1:45 pm Monday - Thursday) or a full day (8:30 am - 3:30 pm Monday - Thursday).
About the Summer Arts for Learning Academy:
Baltimore City Schools’ Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA), operated by Arts for Learning Maryland (formerly Young Audiences of Maryland), offers students an opportunity to imagine, create, and express who they are through the arts. This is an action-packed, full-day, six-week program (Monday - Thursday) that introduces students to a wide variety of art forms—from illustration and spoken word to percussion, drama, and dance—which gives students a chance to work alongside students from across the city and be taught by professional Artists. Students’ work is celebrated through a student showcase on the final day of the program. Arts for Learning Maryland will host nine Academy sites throughout the city, locations TBD. Each classroom will have 26 students.

The mission of Arts for Learning’s elementary grade Summer Arts for Learning Academy is to provide students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a Summer learning from the best Teachers and Teaching Artists our state has to offer. Ideal Teaching Artists Have:
● Expertise in an art form.
● Experience working collaboratively and adopting/developing a co-teaching model with academic Teachers.
● An ability to attend and engage in all required training and program dates.

● A willingness to use either the school office landline or their personal cell phone (number blocking is acceptable) to contact parents as needed.
● An ability to create inclusive environments where all students’ unique gifts and talents are discovered and cultivated, and where students’ identities (racial, cultural, social, gender, etc.) are acknowledged, affirmed, and reflected around them.
● An ability to examine biases and an understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and its impact on policies and practices, especially related to the administration of public education.

Required Dates, Times and Working Hours:
Teaching Artists must be able to commit to attending all training and program days listed below:
● Before Professional Development Week: All SALA Teaching Artists will need to attend approximately 23 hours of professional development training sessions prior to PD week. First-year SALA Teaching Artists will need to attend an additional orientation. The dates and times for these events will be shared at a later date. All sessions are required and paid.
● Training and Professional Development Week - Monday, June 27th through Thursday, June 30th 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. This is required and is paid.
● Academy Dates: For all sites, the program will run Monday through Thursday and will begin on July 5th and end on August 11th. Program hours are 8:30 am (Breakfast) to 3:00 pm.
○ Full Day Teaching Artist time commitment: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm on program days (Monday - Thursday).
○ Partial Day Teaching Artist time commitment: 8:30 am - 1:45 pm on program days (Monday - Thursday). Partial Day Teaching Artists may be asked to support Thursday SALAbrations (1:45 pm - 3:30 pm) on an as needed basis.
● In Program Planning and Meetings: Teaching Artists will be paid for an additional 3 hours per week during the 6 program weeks to attend staff meetings, have collaborative planning
sessions, and other meetings/prep outside of the program hours. These hours are paid upon completion of the program. Weekly meeting structure:
○ Tuesday: virtual grade level check ins and professional development 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
○ Wednesday: virtual collaborative planning and support from Instructional Coaches 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm.
○ One 30 minute staff meeting per week - days/times TBD by Site Directors.
○ 30 minutes of independent planning time.
Compensation:
● The SALA Teaching Artist position is a seasonal full-time exempt position and is not eligible for health benefits or overtime.
● Teaching Artists will be paid an hourly rate of $50.00. Roles:
Teaching Artists are needed in both of the following roles:
● Full-Day Teaching Artist: In this role, Teaching Artists will design and deliver arts-integrated lessons and creative process based lessons in their art form. Teaching Artists in this role will be needed from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm during program days (Monday - Thursday).
● Partial Day Teaching Artist: In this role, Teaching Artists will design and deliver arts-integrated lessons. Teaching Artists in this role will be needed from 8:30 am to 1:45 pm on program days (Monday - Thursday). Partial Day Teaching Artists may be asked to support Thursday SALAbrations (1:45 pm - 3:30 pm) on an as needed basis.
Job Responsibilities:
● Co-plan and co-teach all arts-integrated literacy and/or math lessons with a partner Teacher.
● Serve as lead Teaching Artist for two daily arts-integrated classes: one math and one literacy.
● Lead a daily SQUAD time (small homeroom group) that promotes character development and builds relationships with students.
● Follow and uphold all COVID health and safety procedures and protocols aimed at ensuring a safe environment for students and staff.
● Provide one-on-one instruction and support to students, as needed while adhering to social distancing protocols.
● Create a positive culture and climate within their classroom; address any issues (including disciplinary) within the parameters of site procedures and expectations.
● Build relationships with students, staff, and families and create a positive, supportive community within the classroom and site.
● In partnership with the Teacher partner, deliver content effectively using the Arts for Learning Maryland SALA Literacy and Eureka Math curricula.
● Attend all staff and grade band meetings as instructed by the Site Director.
● Lead a daily Arts Major or Arts Exploration class. These classes are not co-taught with the teacher partner and are fully the responsibility of the Artist to teach their art form.
● Full Day Teaching Artists will support SALAbrations every Thursday from 1:45 pm - 3:30 pm. Partial Day Teaching Artists may be asked to support Thursday SALAbrations (1:45 pm - 3:30 pm) on an as needed basis.
● If needed, support the structured team building recess block two times per week in partnership with P.E. Coaches and P.E. Assistant Coaches.
● Attend all professional development and planning meetings as instructed by the Site Director.
● Complete or oversee the completion of all required paperwork as assigned by the Site Director including student attendance records, student pre and post surveys or assessments, student observation rubrics, student progress reports, etc.
● In partnership with the Teacher partner, complete a daily lesson plan outline for both morning and afternoon classes. All plans must be turned in at the completion of the program. All lesson plans are to be displayed in the lesson folder outside the classroom door each day.
● Engage parents, guardians, and families effectively, including responding to family inquiries in a timely manner, and contacting parents/guardians to provide progress updates, share challenges, etc.
● When appropriate, be in contact with parents/guardians of students within their class to provide progress updates, share challenges, etc. This includes responding to parent/guardian inquiries in a timely manner.
● Assist with the preparation and planning of the final student culminating showcase.
● Collaborate with and provide support for various partnerships and external stakeholders.
● Submit verbal and written reports as required.
● Administer student program evaluations when needed.
